Dr. Grant Nishimura grew up in the Conejo Valley. He pursued his undergraduate studies at UCLA, graduating early after three years and then earned his DDS at the UCLA School of Dentistry, where he received numerous awards. Dr. Nishimura then completed his residency program at the UCLA Medical Center, gaining extensive experience in all aspects of oral and maxillofacial surgery. He also obtained his MD at the UCLA school of Medicine and completed a General Surgery

Speaker:  Dr. Don Nikchevich has limited his practice to dental implant surgery for over 25 years, gaining a level of expertise that has allowed him to pioneer surgical procedures to advance the field of implant dentistry. He lectures to groups of colleagues throughout the country on various topics related to implant surgery and has worked closely with the developers of the Yomi robotic-assisted surgery system to expand its capabilities and improve treatment outcomes for patients.

Unmasking the Opioid Epidemic

The increased usage of opioids to treat oral pain has caused a spike in Opioid Use Disorder and unintentional overdoses. Your patient intake procedures are the first point of contact you have in uncovering potential and even existing indicators of abuse or addiction. Careful screening methods are essential in the everyday clinical practice to support your patients and ensure a healthy post-surgical experience. Early detection and careful screening are critical when dealing with opioid addiction. 

As health care professionals, we are ideal first responders to help our patients that use in an unhealthy manner. This program will increase awareness of these additive drugs and elevate our role as health care professionals.

 

Educational Objectives:

 

  • Understand how opioids lead to addition

  • Recognize the signs and symptoms of opioid abuse and overdose

  • Understand pain management alternatives used in dentistry and the role of Naloxone in reversing its effects

  • Discuss hygienist role in the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP), possible patient referral sources and proper disposal of medication

She spoke with our Hygiene group last year and is an international clinician with over 35 years of experience practicing in Switzerland, Greece, Saudi Arabia, and the United States. Janis received her degree in dental hygiene form Palm Beach State College in Palm Beach County, Florida. In 2007, Janis obtained her Independent Hygiene Certification allowing her to open her own practice 

in Switzerland, where she practiced for 25 years. Janis has also served as a member of the Straumann Hygiene Advisory Board and is a KOL for several dental companies. Fluent in French, Janis has presented worldwide on the effects of biofilm on systemic health.

Full-Arch Hybrid Maintenance

The demand for a full fixed solution is on the rise and a wonderful solution for many patients. However, once placed they can pose a hygiene challenge for the patient and practitioner. Educating the patient is crucial to long term success. This course will provide evidence-based solutions for optimal maintenance in the office and at home solutions for the patient. Protocols for effective biofilm removal with and without the prosthesis will be discussed.
